We have done quite a bit of camping already this year, although technically one weekend was "glamping" and another "cabining in the woods". Not last weekend though. Nope. For Memorial Day we threw down with about ten other families for two nights of full-on tent camping, sans flush toilets and showers, but with plenty of chewy coffee, filthy kids, beach play, drunken kickball, and spectacular vistas. Oh, yeah, and the bouncy house that somebody brought in for the day.

Now some would think that a weekend spent camping would be the perfect excuse to deviate from work outs, especially given the lack of shower availability. On the contrary, I merely saw this as fertile ground to secure willing work out partners. This meant a fast 6 miler with a friend along the coastal trail on Saturday and nothing less than running a full-on boot camp on Sunday morning.

Specifically, supported by the indefatigable ladies of the NTC app, I recruited about eight other parents to join me in two 15-minute, high-intensity workouts (Cardio Killer and Cardio Burst) that left us shaking and gasping while our kids alternatively looked on or joined in. In intervals ranging between 30 and 60 seconds we did burpees, squat jumps, tuck jumps, long-jumps, plank, froggers, split jumps, lateral hops and any number of other gut-busting exercises. Throughout we laughed at ourselves (suckers for the pain), commented on how awesome it was to get our sweat on outside, and high-fived at the finish. At the end of it all I can say with some certainty that we all felt better for it - even if walking was a little tough the next day. 

Well-known studies have documented the benefits of positive behaviors, as shared among friends:
...found some solid basis for a potentially powerful theory in epidemiology: that good behaviors — like quitting smoking or staying slender or being happy — pass from friend to friend almost as if they were contagious viruses. ... And the same was true of bad behaviors — clusters of friends appeared to “infect” each other with obesity, unhappiness and smoking. Staying healthy isn’t just a matter of your genes and your diet, it seems. Good health is also a product, in part, of your sheer proximity to other healthy people. 

So next time you are with a group of people, see if you can be the spark that ignites some positive action towards improving everyone's health and fitness - your own, your families, and your friends. Trust me, the beer and the s'mores taste even better after a great workout.
